Isavia Group’s EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation) for 2024 was a positive figure of ISK 10.7 billion.

“In addition we had a relative higher number of transfer passengers than expected, a development that at the same time negatively impacted the airport’s income numbers. However, we welcome the increased number of transfer passengers because in the long-term they strengthen our position as a connection hub. The company’s performance and profitability was nevertheless good, although we need to continue to find ways to increase the profitability of the company’s operation in order to be able to finance future developments.”Last year was the biggest investment year since the establishment of the company, where investments amounted to ISK 18.0bn, of which 16.9bn were in Keflavík International Airport. February was another busy month at Keflavík Airport, as the year continues to unfold with steady traffic through Iceland’s main gateway. According to KEF’s passenger forecast, nearly 8.4 million guests are expected to pass through the airport in 2025. A total of 477,833 guests traveled through the airport in February, marking a 2.8% decrease compared to February last year but remaining in line with projections. A total of 20 airlines operated flights to 65 destinations. The most popular destinations among guests were London, Copenhagen, Manchester, Paris, and Amsterdam. The busiest day of the month was February 23, when 22,395 guests made their way through the airport.

According to the Icelandic Tourist Board, around 42,091 Icelanders departed in February, representing a 12% increase compared to last year. Departures of foreign guests from KEF totaled 146,936, a 5.6% decrease from February last year. The majority of foreign departures were accounted for by British travelers (28% of the total), followed by American guests (19%), Chinese visitors (5%), Dutch travelers (4%), and French guests (4%).

New Rules for the Drop-off Lane at the Terminal.

On March 4, a change will be implemented regarding the use of the designated “drop-off lane” at the departure entrance of Keflavík Airport. This lane is intended for drivers who need to pull up briefly to drop off passengers or unload luggage. However, some vehicles have been parked there for extended periods, causing congestion and obstructing access for passengers and emergency services. The new measure aims to ensure quick and safe access for everyone dropping off passengers at the airport. To achieve this, a fee will be introduced for vehicles remaining in the drop-off lane for more than five minutes. In response to passenger needs, the free parking time at the P2 short-term parking area on the arrivals side of the terminal will be extended from 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

Each day, between 1,500 and 1,700 vehicles pass through the drop-off lane, with traffic peaking during busy airport hours. Delays and queues can quickly form if vehicles stop for too long or park in the lane. A study conducted over a one-month period showed that around 8% of vehicles remained in the drop-off lane for 16-20 minutes, disrupting traffic flow and leading to queues that inconvenience other airport visitors. To prevent this and improve circulation, a fee will be charged for vehicles staying longer than five minutes. The vast majority of drivers use the drop-off lane as intended, stopping only briefly. The median stopping time is approximately two and a half minutes, and around 80% of vehicles stay for five minutes or less. Based on this data, the decision was made to allow five minutes of free use in the drop-off lane before introducing a fee. This will help maintain smooth traffic flow and ensure convenient access for all airport visitors. The drop-off lane will remain free for those who use it as intended. Free for the First 5 Minutes

Drivers who need to stay longer than the designated drop-off time can use the short-term parking areas near the terminal: P1 on the departures side and P2 on the arrivals side. Previously, the first 15 minutes of parking at P1 and P2 were free of charge. To accommodate those who need extra time—such as those greeting or saying goodbye to friends and family—the free parking period at P2 has now been extended to 30 minutes.

Keflavík Airport (KEF) is set to introduce an exciting new play area designed for children, created by the Icelandic company Tulipop.

The project is a collaboration between Tulipop, the design team ÞYKJÓ, and IRMA design studio, with the goal of immersing young travellers in the enchanting world of Tulipop. The play area will be located in the airport’s new east wing and is scheduled to open this summer.

Tulipop is a well-known Icelandic brand, founded in 2010 by designer Signý Kolbeinsdóttir and CEO Helga Árnadóttir. The Tulipop universe is a vibrant, imaginative world filled with unique and lovable characters. The company’s biggest project to date is the production of a 52-episode animated series, Tulipop Tales, which has been broadcast internationally. The new play area at KEF aims to make the airport an even more enjoyable place for young travellers. Designed to spark creativity and imagination, the play space will encourage free play and exploration. Located in the new east wing of the airport, the play area will be situated at the end of the Aðalstræti dining area, just before entering the east terminal.

A Fun Space for Young Travelers 

“We are thrilled to be designing a play area for children at Keflavík Airport. Over the past 15 years, we have worked to create a magical visual world and stories for children, rooted in Icelandic creativity. It’s incredibly exciting to bring this world to KEF, in collaboration with ÞYKJÓ and IRMA, who are outstanding in their fields. We also look forward to introducing children from around the world to the magic of Tulipop,” says Helga Árnadóttir, CEO of Tulipop. In addition to the play area, an interactive iWall from Finnish company CSE Entertainment will be installed nearby. This engaging play feature allows children to step directly into an adventure, becoming part of the game—an exciting and active way to pass the time while traveling.

Gebr. Heinemann will take over the concession for operating duty-free stores at Keflavik International Airport (KEF) in the spring of 2025. Isavia, the operator of KEF, accepted Gebr. Heinemann's bid following a tender process. Three other companies also submitted bids for the Duty-Free store concession and facilities. Gebr. Heinemann's offer was chosen based on predetermined selection criteria. The Agreement for the concession between Gebr. Heinemann and Isavia has entered into effect.During the tender process, emphasis was placed on ensuring that passengers at Keflavik Airport feel they are in Iceland when passing through the duty-free stores at KEF. This is evident not only from the design of the shops, but also from the range of products on sale – 30 per cent of the assortment will consist of Icelandic products. Gebr. Heinemann will operate a departure shop (1,700 square metres), an arrival shop (2,280 square metres) and a gate shop.Gebr. Heinemann is a family-owned company based in Germany. Frequent volcanic eruptions at the Sundhnúkar Craters affected demand among international tourists traveling to Iceland. While KEF’s passenger forecast estimated 2.4 million foreign visitors, the actual number reached 2.3 million in 2024. Nevertheless, international passenger numbers grew by 2.1% compared to 2023. A total of 600,000 Icelanders travelled abroad last year, representing a 0.1% year-on-year increase.

Transit passengers, those using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland, totalled 2.58 million, representing 31.1% of the airport’s total visitors last year. This marks a significant increase from 21.2% in 2023 and highlights KEF's growing importance as a transit hub.

London and Copenhagen remained the most popular destinations, continuing trends from previous years.London was particularly notable, with flights to four airports — Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton— operated by seven airlines: British Airways, easyJet, Icelandair, Jet2.com, Play, TUI, and Wizz Air.The airport with the most flights to and from KEF was Copenhagen Airport. Three airlines — Icelandair, Play, and SAS — provided year-round service between these two locations.

The single busiest day of 2024 was August 4th, when KEF welcomed 36,923 guests. Of these, 12,766 were transit passengers, representing 34.6% of the total. There were 224 passenger flights that day.

We anticipate moderate growth, making 2025 the third largest year for passenger numbers at Keflavík Airport and a record year for foreign tourist arrivals. This reflects the airport's strong position as a hub and Iceland’s continued appeal as a destination despite recent challenges.

"This year, we will complete the opening the new east wing of the terminal, including four new gangways that provide direct access to aircraft. The expected 0.8% year-on-year growth in 2025 is most notable in April, with a projected 16.7% increase, and in May, with a 7.1% rise.During the summer months, 26 airlines are scheduled to operate flights to 92 destinations, while in winter, 21 airlines will serve 70 destinations. Transit passengers, using KEF as a connecting hub without staying in Iceland, are expected to make up around 30% of the total passenger count, similar to 2024.

Isavia and 22 partner organizations were recently awarded an European Union grant of ISK 3.5 billion for the LIFE ICEWATER project, which aims to accelerate and improve the implementation of Iceland's water management plan.

The <a href="https://webgate.ec.europa.eu/life/publicWebsite/project/LIFE23-IPE-IS-LIFE-ICEWATER-101147387/for-the-future-of-water-implementation-of-river-basin-management-plan-in-iceland" target="_blank">LIFE ICEWATER project</a> has the following objectives:<ul><li>Increase knowledge about the use, properties, and condition of water in Iceland.</li><li>Ensure seamless and coordinated administration of water management issues.</li><li>Improve water quality, for example, through upgrades to sewage systems and the purification of wastewater.</li><li>Educate the public and stakeholders on the importance of water.</li></ul>The European Union’s grant for LIFE ICEWATER in Iceland is one of the largest ever received by the country. The total scope of the projects assembled by the collaborative group amounts to ISK 5.8 billion.The EU's LIFE program is funding 60% of the project, which will be carried out from 2025 to 2030.

LOT Polish Airlines will launch flights between Warsaw and Keflavík Airport starting April 12, 2025. 

This marks the first time that the airline, which is Poland's national carrier, flies to Iceland. The airline plans to fly to Iceland the whole year round. LOT will operate four weekly flights to KEF during the summer and three weekly flights during the winter. Flights will be operated with LOT's Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft, departing Warsaw in the evening and returning from KEF on overnight flights.

The Aðalstræti dining area debuted this fall in KEF’s departure hall, earning rave reviews from travellers and food lovers alike. This vibrant space is home to three new restaurants: the popular burger spot Yuzu, the Italian-inspired La Trattoria, and the Mexican eatery Zócalo.Part of the new east wing expansion—adding nearly 30% more space to the terminal—Aðalstræti was designed by the Icelandic design firm HAF Studio. The area reflects the charm of Reykjavik’s city centre, creating a welcoming atmosphere that blends modernity with local tradition.With this addition, Keflavík Airport now boasts an even broader range of dining options, ensuring there’s something to satisfy every palate.

Zócalo introduces Iceland to fresh and healthy Mexican cuisine. The restaurant is connected to Icelandic culinary heritage through its owner, Einar Örn Einarsson, co-founder of the popular Serrano chain. This KEF location marks Zócalo’s first in Iceland.The menu offers a variety of delicious options, including high-quality burritos, burrito bowls, quesadillas, tacos, nachos, and salads, all designed to excite the taste buds.

A total of 529,411 guests passed through the airport in November.

The month of November was eventful and enjoyable at Keflavík Airport (KEF), with a 1.4% increase in passenger numbers compared to November last year.Sixteen airlines operated flights to 63 destinations, with the most popular destinations being London, Copenhagen, Manchester, New York, and Amsterdam.The busiest day in November was November 3, when 21,754 guests passed through the airport.

According to data from the <a href="https://www.ferdamalastofa.is/en/moya/news/162-thousand-departures-of-foreign-travelers-in-november" target="_self">Icelandic Tourist Board</a>, departures by Icelanders totaled 35,000 in November.Departures of foreign visitors reached 162,000, an increase of 14,000 compared to November last year.The majority of these departures were by Americans (23% of total departures), followed by British travelers (21%), Italians (5%), Germans (5%), and finally French visitors (4%).

It was a historic moment when Icelandair’s first-ever Airbus jet landed at Keflavík Airport (KEF) this week. Before making its landing in Keflavík, the aircraft was flown over the capital region, allowing onlookers to admire it in flight. The jet is an A321LR model with the registration number TF-IAA and has been named Esja.

A large crowd gathered on the airport tarmac to witness the landing, and the crew received a warm welcome inside the terminal, complete with bouquets of flowers. Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair, greeted the group and celebrated the latest addition to the airline’s fleet.

The new dining area, Aðalstræti, operated by Lagardère Travel Retail, is now open in the departures hall, featuring the burger joint Yuzu, the Italian restaurant La Trattoria, and the Mexican eatery Zócalo. Aðalstræti is part of the airport’s newly unveiled east wing, marking a 30% expansion of the terminal.
