KEF Drop- Off Lane

Improved Access to KEFImproved Access to KEF
A fee is now charged for those who stay more than 5 minutes in the drop-off lane at the departure entrance of Keflavík Airport. This lane is intended for quick stops to drop off passengers, unload luggage, or deliver other cargo. The fee applies to vehicles that remain in the drop-off area for longer than five minutes.
- Every day, between 1,500 and 1,700 vehicles pass through the drop-off lane, with traffic peaking during busy periods at KEF. Even minor delays can lead to congestion and queues when vehicles remain stopped for too long or, in some cases, are parked in the lane.
- There have been repeated instances of drivers leaving their cars in the drop-off lane for extended periods, disrupting traffic flow and potentially obstructing access for passengers and emergency responders.
- This new system is designed to ensure quick and safe access to the drop-off lane for everyone using the airport.
To better accommodate passengers, the free parking duration at the P2 parking area, located on the arrivals side of the terminal, has been extended from 15 minutes to 30 minutes. Additionally, parking at P1 parking remains free for up to 15 minutes.
- A study conducted over a one-month period showed that:
- 80% of vehicles used the drop-off lane for five minutes or less.
- The median stop time in the lane was 2.5 minutes.
- However, 8% of vehicles remained in the lane for 16–20 minutes, leading to delays, inconvenience for airport guests, and potential challenges for emergency access.
- The drop-off lane remains free to use as intended. This change is aimed only at discouraging improper use of the area, ensuring smoother traffic flow for all passengers.
